Salary Range: 2500 – 4000 USD/month

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (EST)

NOTE: INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR POSITION

Company Overview:

Sagan is an exclusive membership community for top executives, founders, and CEOs seeking to hire and maximize the impact of international talent. We bridge the gap between global talent and US-based businesses, connecting candidates from vibrant regions like Latin America, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Africa with leading American companies. Sagan provides a high-performance remote work environment, ensuring access to world-class opportunities for top-tier professionals.

About the Company:

We are a pet aftercare provider specializing in compassionate end-of-life services for pets. We support pet owners through one of the most difficult moments by offering cremation, burial, and memorial services, along with grief support and remembrance options.

Position Overview:

The Ruby on Rails Engineer will be the primary engineer responsible for maintaining and evolving our applications. Your first 30 days will focus exclusively on a deep-dive knowledge transfer from our outgoing provider. Success is defined by your ability to document the existing architecture and take over deployment duties without service interruption.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintain the core Ruby on Rails codebase, manage PostgreSQL/MySQL database migrations, and fix production bugs within 48 hours.
Lead weekly technical syncs to explain system health and provide estimates for new features.
Own the deployment pipeline and make critical calls on security patches and dependency updates.
Create comprehensive “System Manuals” including environment variables, API endpoints, and third-party integrations to ensure zero single-point-of-failure.

Qualifications:

3+ years of professional experience in Ruby on Rails development.
Deep understanding of ActiveRecord, background processing (Sidekiq/Resque), and RESTful API design.
Experience with RSpec or Minitest to ensure code stability.
Hands-on experience managing production environments on AWS or Heroku.
Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.

Key Attributes:

You prefer working independently and don’t need a project manager to tell you when a server needs attention.
You believe that if it isn’t documented, it doesn’t exist.
You are clear and blunt about technical risks and timelines.

Nice-to-Haves:

Experience in the Pet Services or SaaS industry.
Knowledge of Docker or containerized deployment workflows.
Familiarity with Payment Gateway integrations (Stripe/PayPal).
