About Us

We’re a small Canadian bookkeeping and advisory firm with a remote team. We’re hiring experienced bookkeepers to carry their own client portfolios.

About the Role

This is a portfolio role, not a task queue.

You’ll own the monthly bookkeeping for a set of small business clients: reconciliations, month-end close, sales tax and remittance checks, and clean financials delivered on time. You’ll work from a structured close checklist, and your work is reviewed before it goes out.

What You’ll Do

  • Run month-end closes for multiple clients in QuickBooks Online
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, loan and clearing accounts to source statements
  • Prepare Canadian GST/HST and PST filings and tie remittances to the tax account (we’ll train you on the Canadian rules)
  • Keep payables and receivables clean and match payments properly
  • Ask clients clear, specific questions and follow up until the file is complete
  • Log your time accurately and flag scope or hours issues early

Who You Are

  • Firm-trained. You’ve carried several unrelated clients at once, not one company’s books.
  • Accurate. A reconciliation that’s off by $0.02 isn’t done.
  • Independent. You work through a file without daily direction and ask focused questions.
  • Clear. Your notes and client questions don’t need a follow-up to be understood.

Must-Haves

  • 3+ years of full-cycle bookkeeping for multiple clients at an accounting or bookkeeping firm (in-house only experience is not a fit)
  • VAT or sales tax returns for clients
  • Strong QuickBooks Online or Xero skills
  • Month-end close and reconciliation experience, including clearing accounts
  • Excellent written English
  • Available full-time, Monday to Friday, 6 PM to 2 AM South Africa time (night shift)
  • Reliable internet, quiet workspace, and backup power and internet
  • References we can speak with

Nice-to-Haves

  • Canadian or US clients
  • Payroll remittance reconciliation
  • Cleanup or catch-up engagements
  • ICB bookkeeping qualification, or SAIPA or SAIBA membership
  • QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification

Software

If you have experience with any of the following, note it in your application:

  • QuickBooks Online (QBO)
  • Xero
  • Sage
  • Double (formerly Keeper)
  • Dext or Hubdoc
  • Plooto
  • Gusto or Wagepoint
  • Jobber or Knowify
  • Excel or Google Sheets (formulas and lookups)

Logistics

  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 6 PM to 2 AM South Africa time (9 AM to 5 PM Vancouver time)
  • Setup: 100% remote
  • Compensation: Based on experience. Share your expectations in your application.
  • Term: Long-term role

How to Apply

Apply through this posting. Generic applications will be ignored.

Follow these instructions exactly:

  1. Start the first line of your application with the word LEDGER in capital letters.
  2. Answer the four questions below in order, numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  3. After your answers, list the software from the list above that you have used, one per line, with the number of years beside each. If you have used none of them, write “None.”
  4. End your application with your salary expectation for a full-time role on these hours, written as a monthly amount in USD.

The four questions:

  1. Describe your most recent bookkeeping role: who employed you, who the clients were, and how many separate, unrelated clients you handled at the same time.
  2. A client pays five vendor bills through a payment platform, and the platform withdraws one lump sum from the bank. How do you record this in QuickBooks Online or Xero so the bank reconciliation is clean?
  3. A new client’s bank accounts haven’t been reconciled in eight months, and accounts receivable shows $47,000 that the owner says was mostly paid. Where do you start, and why?
  4. What industries have you worked with the most?

Applications that skip any of these steps will not be reviewed.
